For your Burgers and Other Things

If you’ve heard the new burger ads lately, you’ve undoubtedly heard them mention Bacon jam. Well, I have an alternative recipe that isn’t as fattening, made with sun dried tomatoes and low fat turkey bacon. So you can have all that flavor on any type of burger, or any kind of sandwich for that matter, but less fattening than the regular kind.

Sun-dried Tomato Turkey Bacon Jam


1 1/2 cups of Sun-dried Tomatoes, julienne cut  (I use Bella SunLuci, the whole 3/3.5 oz pkg)

1 1/2 cups boiling water

1 package of Low Fat Turkey Bacon (I use Godshalls 94% Fat Free Turkey Bacon)

1 Large Yellow Onion

1 cup Brown Sugar

2 Tbsp Molasses

1/4 cup Vinegar

1 tsp White Pepper (or black pepper – to taste)


Place the sundried tomatoes in the boiling hot water in a bowl, cover and set aside. Cook bacon in a large skillet, over medium-high heat until just getting crisp. Add chopped onions and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Then add tomatoes, water, brown sugar, vinegar, and white pepper. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to a low simmer. Simmer for about 40 to 45 minutes, until thickened and the water has completely reduced. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Placing in a blender or food processor and puree lightly, leaving some chunks in it. You basically want to chop up any big chunks of bacon. It’s up to you how smooth or chunky you want the end results to be. Personally, I like mine to be kind of chunky.

You can make this up to a week ahead and stored it in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
