About Metabolism

It’s not uncommon to hear someone blaming weight gain or the lack of weight loss on a slow metabolism. Pointing to family genetics, change in lifestyle or age. Metabolism is a catch all for all of the chemical processes that occur invisibly in our bodies. I’m not saying that there are no metabolic disorders. I have one myself, so I wouldn’t say that. But being someone who have been researching nutrition my entire life, I do know that their are a number of people that blame a slow metabolism for their weight, when they have the power to change it. So with that in mind, I’ll continue. Scientific research revealed that a fast acting metabolism, the increase in energy used to perform the chemical reactions that cause fat burning, can defiantly be linked to prolonged weight loss and a slimmer body. If you want to try the best weight loss program there is, you need to pay attention. There are many ways to increase your metabolism but there is no way more important than your diet. Here are some snacks that you can add to your diet to give your metabolism a boost and start speeding it up.

You will never meet another person more in favor of avocados. They should be in every guide on how to increase your metabolism to lose weight and weight loss plan . Yes avocados are high in fat. However, it is monounsaturated fat which is great for your body. Avocados helps to raise your metabolism while dealing you a healthy serving of protein, fiber, and good fat all in one tasty and hand held green skinned fruit. You can make guacamole with low fat ingredients or simply add avocado to your sandwiches and salads in order to get an instant boost to your diet.

“High Fiber” Cereal

Cereals that are high in fiber, have been scientifically shown to be the perfect breakfast item for those people looking to improve their metabolism in a healthy way. Including them in your breakfast is a good idea. According to the Journal of American Dietetic Association “women who ate cereal regularly were 30% less likely to be overweight.” High fiber cereals digest slowly, boosting your metabolism. Meaning, they keep you full and energized much longer. The fiber in the cereal also keeps your insulin levels, preventing the addition of fat to your body also. In other word it help regulate your blood sugars.

Adding low fat cheese to sandwiches and main dishes can be a great way to spike your fat burning potential. It’s a boost of calcium and protein that can do wonders for your diet. The ease with which cheeses can be integrated into a complex diet is amazing. Just be sure to stick to low fat real cheese, for the fat burning effect.

Jalapeño Poppers

If you don’t mind a little heat then consider adding Jalapeño poppers to your diet. Jalapeños are full of a chemical known as capcasein and it does wonders to your metabolism. The chemical will increase your heat rate and boost your metabolism. That makes enduring the heat of the pepper, well worth it! Just avoid the heavily fried poppers, because they are heart attacks waiting to happen. Go for the oven cooked snacks for the best choice for this tasty snack.

Lean Meat

Unfortunately, beef has gotten a bad rep in the weight loss world. Thanks mostly to foods like hamburgers, lasagna, and gigantic and juicy steaks. The fact is, lean meats like beef, chicken, and turkey can be looked at as supporters of metabolism growth. The real reason these foods are so helpful in metabolism boosting, they take so long to digest. Which means they expend a large amount of energy to be digested. All the protein you eat also means you’ll be burning fat, not muscle. So you’ll maintain a measure of your form and figure or muscles. Lean turkey (in the proper serving) can give you 26 grams of protein, just 1 gram of fat and a total of only 120 calories. That’s an effective and life changing ratio.

Greek Yogurt

Get an extra blend of protein, by adding Greek yogurt to your snacks. Greek yogurt has almost 18 grams of protein per 6 ounces. It usually doesn’t have all the fillers and additives that other yogurt products have. That makes it a quick filling that works well with other snacks. Adding oats or berries can make this snack very fulfilling. Avoid chocolate chips, in general but if you must, add only a few dark chocolate which are full of antioxidants.

Garlic, even though strong smelling, is a must add in your diet. Garlic is full of health benefits ranging from fighting against disease all the way to immunity boosting. Garlic also helps you to shed weight! Garlic is found in a lot of common foods that lead to the body’s production of fat. But don’t eat garlic by the clove, you still want to use it in moderation. Add garlic to your pasta dishes as a way to get a lot of flavor while also doing your body a big favor. The Journal of Nutrition shows a direct link with calories burned during daily activities and meals that included garlic that were consumed prior to those activities. Just don’t forget some minty gum or breath mints to get the smell out!

Just about any kind of berry will help in metabolism boosting your diet but we highlighted raspberries for a reason. Raspberries contain 8g of fiber by the cup and sit at only 60 calories per serving. This sweet little snack is perfect for the out on the go lunches or to add for the picky eaters. Raspberries are sweet and easy to eat. Most of all, they’re affordable at the supermarket. Stock up on raspberries or any other berry that is high in fiber (strawberries, blueberries) in order to reap the benefits down the line. Make a minor treat by adding a little bit of whip cream and some oats to your bowl. The oats boost your fiber content and the whip cream just adds some extra sweetness. If you want it to better for you, add a dollop of Greek yogurt instead of whipped cream.

Oranges are a popular snack they’ve been the cornerstone of the on the go lunches forever. This citrus fruit is stocked full of vitamin C, which helps you metabolize fat quicker. Your daily dose of vitamin C should sit at 60 MG per day, if you consume upwards of 500 MG, you can see your fat burning abilities boost by almost 50%. Eat an orange pre-workout and reap the benefits when you start to sweat. Studies show that eating oranges for 12 weeks will result in rapid weight loss. It’s the vitamin C you need in a natural source.

At this point in the scientific advancements of nutrition, salmon should be a staple in most peoples diets. This fish is full of great oils, nutritious, and loaded with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Salmon helps to reduce your bodies leptin hormone levels and prompts your body to burn more calories. Not only will eating salmon help you lose weight but it will also do wonders for your hair and skin. If you don’t like the taste of salmon or just fish in general you can instead opt for fish oil capsules. Personally I wouldn’t with all I’ve learned about them. Because you won’t be able to absorb much of what’s in them. If you want the benefits you need to get it from the source. The only other good natural source I know of is chia seeds.

Green Tea

When speaking comparatively, green tea is goin to beat the heck out of most common beverage. I wrote a blog about tea not to long ago. There are many options available in the grocery stores. From soda-pop to sugar filled juices, there’s very few ready to drink consumables that could help your metabolism. Green tea’s a great replacement for coffee, because it doesn’t rely on caffeine to boost your metabolism. A chemical in the tea called EGCG boosts the activity inside of your brain, kick starts your nervous system, and starts the burning of calories. Start your day with tea and the effect will last throughout the day. Green tea is a bland drink but can be spiced up with minor amounts of honey or berries for a tasty lunch beverage. You can get a green tea and chamomile tea blend for a good evening drink.

Grapefruit got a gimmicky reputation with regards to weight loss, due to the popular but failed grapefruit diet that made the rounds on the Internet a few years back. This failed diet doesn’t disprove the effectiveness of grapefruit when used as a metabolism booster. Grapefruit is filled with fiber that leaves you fuller for a longer period of time. The galacturonic acid inside of the grapefruit also helps your body breakdown stored fat in your body. Adding a grapefruit to your breakfast could go a long way toward cutting the LBs and looking better than ever. I peal them and eat them like an orange for an afternoon snack.

  1. So glad to hear that my kids’ favorite food is a metabolism booster… they pretty much live off of cheese and berries! 🙂 And heavily-watered-down-apple-juice, but that’s probably not going to be so fabulous. ;)Interesting post!

Thanks for this great post. I love your suggestions of metabolism boosters. I’m definitely going to try the Jalapeno poppers, as I love the crunch and peppery taste of Jalapeno but didn’t realise that it helped your metabolism. Just another good reason to enjoy them.
Another thing that I have found works really well to boost my metabolism is a glass of warm water with lemon juice squeezed into it first thing in the morning.
